Sustainable Tourism Research Centre
Croatia is taking a significant step towards enhancing sustainable tourism through the establishment of a new research and development center in collaboration with the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the University of Zagreb. This center, focused on sustainable tourism, is set to address critical environmental and social challenges while reinforcing Croatia’s position as a leader in responsible tourism along its Adriatic coastline. The initiative’s primary goals include reducing the environmental impact of tourism by minimizing waste and promoting recycling and eco-friendly practices. This effort aims to tackle the growing issue of plastic pollution, which threatens Croatia’s natural landscapes where the unique combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage draws thousands of visitors each year.
In addition to waste reduction, the center will emphasize the adoption of renewable energy and energy-efficient practices within the tourism sector. This includes the promotion of solar panels, electric transportation, and other energy-saving technologies. By implementing these measures, the center aims to reduce the carbon emissions associated with tourism activities, making the industry more sustainable and less harmful to the environment. This is particularly relevant for small, tourism-driven communities such as Bol, where the local economy heavily relies on a balance between tourism and environmental conservation. The center will also focus on climate change adaptation, recognizing the increasing threats posed by climate-related risks to coastal regions. Developing strategies to enhance the resilience of tourism destinations, including coastal protection plans and climate-resilient infrastructure, is essential for safeguarding Croatia’s vulnerable coastal areas.
Moreover, the center will work to preserve social sustainability and support local communities by promoting tourism practices that protect cultural heritage and ensure that tourism benefits are equitably distributed. This involves preventing over-tourism in sensitive areas and supporting the preservation of traditional crafts and practices, which are integral to Croatia’s cultural identity. For example, in Bol, restaurants play a crucial role in showcasing local culinary traditions, making it essential to support these businesses in a sustainable manner that benefits both the local economy and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Through rigorous research and data analysis, the center will provide policymakers with the necessary information to craft balanced tourism policies that align tourism development with environmental and social sustainability goals. This evidence-based approach is crucial for ensuring that the growth of tourism benefits all stakeholders and does not come at the expense of Croatia’s natural and cultural assets. The center will also serve as a hub for research and knowledge exchange, bringing together academics, industry professionals, and policymakers to share best practices and promote innovation in sustainable tourism.
