Everyone’s talking about the unusual burek from Zagreb’s Tkalčićeva Street – we tried it, and here’s what it’s all about.
Before you get offended at the mention of a “sweet potato burek,” our advice is to give it a chance – you might just like it.
Instead of traditional phyllo dough, the filling is wrapped in rice paper, and instead of meat, it’s packed with sweet potato — that’s the most accurate way to describe the burek we recently tried, the one everyone’s been talking about. And yes, we know — some will insist that the only real burek is the one with meat, and everything else is just pie. But as it turns out, this dish will surprise you with much more than just its filling.
We recently tried the sweet potato version, which also includes Swiss chard and is served with a cashew and garlic cream that tastes almost identical to real dairy sour cream—and we have to say, we really liked it. The burek was perfectly seasoned, rich, and flavorful, with a crisp exterior (without the rubbery texture that sometimes occurs when using rice paper) and a creamy filling. From the very first bite, it became clear why guests keep coming back to BioMania for more.
