A perfect opportunity to try the specialties of the new restaurant at the top of Tkalča.

BioMania – From Brač to Zagreb

If you’ve visited Bol on Brač in the past six years, chances are you’ve tried at least one of BioMania’s specialties. Whether at their street food stand on Zlatni Rat or their bistro in the town center, BioMania is known for its unique, fresh, and healthy organic and vegan dishes.

Years of dedication—both in the kitchen and in the fields where they grow some of their own ingredients—have earned them recognition from countless guests. This year, BioMania received TripAdvisor’s prestigious “Best of the Best” award, placing them among the top 10 vegan and vegetarian restaurants in the world. We wrote about it here.

To the delight of BioMania’s Brač fans now living in Zagreb—and Zagreb locals who haven’t yet had the chance to try their food—BioMania opened its first Zagreb restaurant at the end of last year.

BioMania Arrives in the Heart of Zagreb

Just days before the official opening, we visited BioMania and spoke with founder Dario Kožul about the new restaurant. They had been thinking about franchising for a while, and when the perfect opportunity arose, they chose Zagreb. Now, they’re already considering more locations—both in Croatia and abroad, as interest in their concept is high.

During our visit, the team was putting the final touches on the space. The large dining area was already filled with plants and simple holiday decorations, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The interior design was crafted by Snješka Popović Kožul.

BioMania opened on Saturday, December 28, 2024, and we’ve already had a chance to try some of the dishes. Read on for all the details and our first impressions

Food & Drinks

Everything at BioMania is vegan and organic. Almost all ingredients are certified, and if they’re not, the owners personally ensure that they meet their standards. In fact, on Brač, they even grow some of their own tomatoes, herbs, microgreens, and edible flowers.

“Our commitment to food starts long before the ingredients reach the kitchen. We don’t just care that they’re organic—we care about who grows them. We personally know around 90% of our suppliers.”

BioMania is an all-day dining spot, offering a variety of breakfasts (served until 3 PM), appetizers, main courses, and desserts. The Zagreb menu features some of their most popular dishes from Brač, as well as new creations.

For breakfast, they serve avocado toast, a mung bean omelet with black salt, turmeric, and vegetables, as well as toasted homemade bread with a chickpea, nori seaweed, caper, and olive spread. Once fully operational, they plan to expand their breakfast menu with pancakes, banana bread, and millet porridge. Smoothie lovers will find fantastic options featuring ingredients like blue spirulina, hemp protein, and black tahini.

Among the appetizers, the highlights include red lentil and coconut soup, burek wrapped in rice paper, and a vegan cheese platter with nuts, dried fruit, vegetables, and crackers.

The main courses currently feature the Falafel Bowl, Red Curry Bowl, gnocchi with truffles, sarma (stuffed cabbage rolls), pasta carbonara and bolognese, as well as BioMania burgers made with a grain-based patty and delicious toppings.

For dessert, they offer chocolate cake, avocado cake, apple crumble, and homemade ice cream.

To drink, BioMania serves kombucha, freshly squeezed juices, and a carefully curated selection of organic and biodynamic wines, produced without additives and with very low sulfite levels.

What We Tried

Winter Curry Bowl

For starters, we had the Red Curry Bowl, their winter version of the dish. The chef explained that they adapt the vegetables to the season, so in winter, the dish includes leeks, cauliflower, black sesame, and garlic sprouts, served on a bed of basmati rice. The rich sauce, made from tomatoes and coconut milk, is infused with their own Indian spice blend—giving the dish a deep, layered flavor. We loved it and will definitely order it again!

Falafel Bowl

Next up was the Falafel Bowl, featuring colorful quinoa, fresh greens, carrots, beets, pomegranate, toasted walnuts, and house-made falafel. What ties it all together? Their incredible homemade herb mayo added the perfect touch of creaminess.

Plum Dumplings

Throughout the day, they also serve gluten-free dumplings made from white sweet potatoes, filled with plums and topped with cinnamon, coconut sugar, and gluten-free breadcrumbs—a comforting, homemade treat.

Double Chocolate Cake

For dessert, we tried the Double Chocolate Cake, made from cashews, cocoa, chocolate chips, and maple syrup, topped with crushed hazelnuts. Not too sweet or heavy, it’s the perfect post-meal indulgence—sure to satisfy even the biggest chocolate lovers.
